Nothing sparks a debate like the age-old argument over Sydney and Melbourne – which city reigns as supreme? Then there’s the fight over which city ranks as Australia’s fashion capital. Nothing sparks a debate like the age-old argument over Sydney and Melbourne – which city reigns as supreme? Then there’s the fight over which city ranks as Australia’s fashion capital. The dispute was settled for many last year when two international retail giant chains H&M and Uniqlo leapfrogged Sydney to open their first Australian stores in Victoria’s capital.

“I don’t think that’s just a glib statement,” Australian Retail Association executive director Russell Zimmerman said in a newspaper report. “I really do believe that Melbourne is the capital of fashion in Australia.”

“They’re both great cities to do business in, but right at the moment I think Melbourne probably has a little bit of an edge,” he added.

For Yoko Fashion, each city has a unique sensibility – it’s not about better or less. But for this year, the Home & Giving Fair in Melbourne was our choice to launch the 2015 summer collection, which includes the Milano, Summer Breeze and Oceana ranges. This sumptuous selection of affordable scarves are made with either a blend of linen or silk and reflect the textures and colour palettes of the summer season.

Many of you might think, why would I need a scarf during the warmer months?

Clever accessorising with a scarf provides versatility against everything summer has to offer - the sun, wind and sudden drops in temperature as the day moves to night. A scarf provides practical protection against all of the elements but with the bonus of adding instant pizazz. The texture, colour and fabric of your scarf can re-charge your outfit while distinguishing you as a person of individual style.

And scarves no longer need to be relegated as an accessory you reach for just to drape around your neck. A great example of the versatility of the new Yoko Fashion range is the Summer Breeze collection, which measures 180cm x 100. This new scarf size means you have a versatile wardrobe staple that can be worn as a shoulder-wrap, a skirt and even as a sarong. And no matter what city you find yourself in in Australia, there is always a need for a scrumptious sarong in a super-soft fabric!

“Melbourne does get very hot, and Sydney certainly gets very steamy and hot,” Mr Zimmerman said.

Featured scarf of the month

This month’s featured scarf, the Oceana, features swirls of lemon gelato merging with delicate shades of watermelon and brushes of powdered sky-blue to create a scarf as light as a warm summer breeze. Made of 100% Australian linen and measuring 180cm x 70, this sumptuous scarf will add an instant splash of colour to your summer wardrobe.

Yoko Fashion Travel News

Yoko Fashion has been busy this month at the Home & Giving Fair in Melbourne. Melbourne holds the reputation as being one of the world’s most fashionable cities – and for Yoko Fashion, it’s a sensibility that’s not only expressed in the fabulous dress sense of the city’s residents. The landscapes of the city communicate an aesthetic unique to Melbourne – the graffiti covered laneways, the uber-cool cafes and bustling city markets all serve as the perfect platform to research the colour palettes, textures and themes of our future collections. Stay tuned for next season!

Scarf fact

The first scarf was made in Ancient Rome and was called Sudarium from the Latin word "sweat cloth.”
